Senior Show Celebrates Students' Best Artwork

Commemorating their time in Alma College’s art department, eight graduating seniors display their best creative work in the annual senior show.

The show opens March 19th in the Flora Kirsch Beck Gallery and continues through April 21st. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. A gallery reception takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 31.

Participation in the senior show is a requirement of all students earning degrees in art and design. Students are responsible for selecting the work, matting and displaying it, producing their own publicity, planning their own reception, and installing the show, says Carrie Parks-Kirby, professor of art and design.

“All of these skills are necessary for continuation into the field,” says Parks-Kirby. “These are all things they will have to do as artists.”

Students may display any work they have done throughout their time in the department, but they are encouraged to select works that relate to each other to produce a cohesive show.

“This is a celebration of all the work we’ve produced in the past four years,” says Alexandra Karr. “We are looking back at how our work has changed and improved with all we have learned.”

Susan Wright, an office associate in the Alma College Library, and her son, Andrew Wright, both are displaying their artwork.

“I am extremely excited for the senior show,” says Susan Wright. “It is a great honor to be able to display a portion of my work publicly for the college, community, family and friends to see.

“As a non-traditional student, being able to share this with my son has added another level of pride and excitement,” she says. “Not only do I get to go through this process, celebrating my work while meeting graduation requirements, I am able to enjoy sharing space in the gallery with Andrew along with seven other talented artists.”

This year’s graduating seniors include Karen Hopkins of Morley, Andrew Wright of Alma, Susan Wright of Alma, Caige Lauring of Bloomfield Hills, Alexandra Karr of Grand Blanc, Mary Smuda of Rogers City, Brittany Jones of Grosse Point, and Elisabeth Wilder of Vassar.
