Model UN Team Captures Top Award at Regional

For the 19th consecutive year, Alma College received an “outstanding delegation” award at the Midwest Model United Nations Conference Feb. 15-18 in St. Louis, Mo.

Alma College teams have received 38 out of the 91 “outstanding” awards given since 1994 at the Midwest Regional, says Sandy Hulme, faculty coordinator of Model UN at Alma College.

“This was the youngest team we’ve ever had,” says Hulme. “We had 15 first-time participants and two veterans representing three countries. The team performed extremely well, and we have great expectations of performing well at the national conference in April.”

The Alma teams competed against approximately 75 other delegations at the conference. Only three “outstanding delegation” awards were presented, with one of the awards going to the Alma delegation representing the Dominican Republic.

Model UN attempts to replicate the real United Nations in a competitive manner. Teams of college students take on identities of countries, and delegates from each country meet in committee to propose, discuss and debate topics relevant to issues facing the world community. Once resolutions are completed in committee, they are presented to the Model UN replication of the UN general assembly to be further debated before the assembly votes on resolutions.

When Fremont junior Morgan Beeler first visited Alma College, she immediately crossed it off her list of potential college choices. But once she took a better look at all the opportunities Alma gave its students, she says she quickly reconsidered.

“I’ve been able to get involved in so many amazing things here: Public Affairs Institute, P-Global, Model UN, Center for Responsible Leadership, Kappa Iota and Alma Symphony Orchestra,” she says. “Not only are all of these experiences going to benefit me on a graduate school application, but they have really molded me as a person. I now know who I am and what I want to do with my life.”
