Chorale, Glee Club Perform Shaker Worship Songs

The Alma College Chorale and Glee Club will perform 19th century Shaker worship songs during their annual winter concert.

The choral groups perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19 in the Remick Heritage Center. Admission is free and open to the public; no ticket is required.

The concert will showcase each individual choir, building up for a grand performance combining the two. The main work on the concert is titled “A Shaker Worship Service.”

Alma's choral groups perform with "rugged energy" and "good will."

“Several of the tunes are very well known, but others may be new to most listeners,” says Will Nichols, Secrest Professor of Music and director of Alma Choirs. “The most famous of the Shaker tunes is ‘Simple Gifts,’ which has become one of the most iconic of all American melodies.”

The concert is expected to have a “great energy that speaks to all audience members,” says Nichols.

“I am hopeful that the atmosphere will be one of rugged energy and good will—both characteristics of the Shaker community,” says Nichols.
