TV Commercial Wins Davey Award

The Alma College Marketing and Communications Department was selected by The International Academy of Visual Arts to receive a Davey Award for its 60-second TV commercial that promotes the “Alma Experience.”

With nearly 4,000 entries from across the country and around the world, the Davey Awards honor the finest creative work from the best small firms, agencies and companies worldwide. Despite the stiff competition, Digital Media Editor Skip Traynor says he was confident that Alma’s commercial would come out on top.

“When we discussed entering the commercial into competitions, we knew that we could compete favorably despite not having the resources or staff that other organizations may have had,” he says. “When we won, it reaffirmed our confidence in the quality of the commercial.”

Produced and directed by 2010 Alma College graduate Vaughn Brines, Alma’s award-winning TV commercial packs more than 500 still images within a 60-second stop-motion storyline that illustrates the transforming opportunities that students have to learn and grow during their four years at Alma.

Brines worked with members of Alma staff, including Traynor, to coordinate the shooting of the 19 scenes depicting campus and residence hall life, academics, research with faculty, study abroad and community volunteerism. Many scenes include student extras and glimpses of Alma faculty and staff playing cameo roles.

The 2011 Commercial Gold Award Winner can be viewed on the Alma College Website as well as on the Alma College YouTube Channel.

The Davey Awards competition is sanctioned and judged by the International Academy of the Visual Arts, an invitation-only body consisting of top-tier professionals from a "Who's Who" of acclaimed media, advertising and marketing firms, including Coach, HBO and Yahoo!
