Fulbright Award Supports German Language Study
Alma College faculty member Holly Liu was awarded a Fulbright grant to attend an academic seminar in Germany last summer — an experience she describes as “mind-opening” in her quest to prepare students to understand and communicate with

 

Bob Devaney, a 1939 graduate of Alma College, went on to become known as one of the greatest coaches in collegiate football history. In his 11 years as head coach at Nebraska, Devaney produced 11 winning seasons with two national championships. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1981. At Alma he played end and was the Scots’ Most Valuable Player in 1938.

Thanks to a Superman cartoon in which a mummy came to life, Dr. Mary Theresa Bonhage-Freund first became interested in archaeology at age 6. When her grandfather took her to The University Museum in her hometown of Philadelphia to see real mummies, she says she knew there was no turning back.

“Archaeology is the cultural anthropology of the past, so there is a natural link between the study of living populations and the lives of their ancestors,” she says. “I find that the study of other cultures, ways of life, and belief systems opens windows to the world I would never have otherwise experienced by merely reading or traveling.”
