College Corner Coffee and Books Opens Its Doors

College Corner Coffee and Books, Alma College’s newest building located on the corner of Superior Street and Wright Avenue, opened its doors to the public on July 1 as the new home of Stucchi’s Ice Cream, managed by local entrepreneurs Mark and Jan Knowles.

Opening day at Stucchi's featured community members joining College faculty, staff and students enjoying ice cream, sandwiches and beverages.

Daily hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. In addition to ice cream, the menu includes gourmet coffee, salads, hot dogs, wraps, Panini sandwiches, soft drinks, smoothies and shakes.

Young customers present Jan Knowles an ice cream decoration to commemorate the re-opeing of Stucchi's.

College Corner Coffee and Books will ultimately feature dual enterprises. The east half of the building features the café, while the west side will eventually house the College bookstore with textbooks for students and general books, magazines, newspapers, school apparel and supplies for the public.

The bookstore portion of the building won’t open until December. Kiltie Korner, the College bookstore, will remain at its current location in the Tyler-VanDusan Campus Center until the end of the fall semester.

Local youth anxiously wait for the opening of Stucchi's Ice Cream in College Corner Coffee and Books.

Leadership Profile

Because she is the Alma College swim team captain and a resident assistant, those who work with Mariah Nawrot might be surprised to find out that the seemingly natural leader is actually very shy.

“Alma has made me step out of my comfort zone and become a leader,” she says. “Despite my shyness, I’ve learned that people are really willing to listen to your guidance if you’re respectful and also listen to where they’re coming from.”
