Students Honored for Commitment to Service
Standish senior Alyssa Walters is one of six students in the state to receive the Outstanding Community Impact Award, which honors students who have made service an integral part of their college experience.

Alma College is one of the first undergraduate colleges in the United States to belong to the International Criminal Court Student Network (ICCSN). Created in 2006 by students at the London School of Economics, the ICCSN aims to promote the work of the ICC and increase knowledge of international criminal law. Alma joins Duke University School of Law, the University of Cambridge and other institutions in a global community that connects students who share an interest in the ICC.

Dr. Carol Bender

Dr. Carol Bender
Departments: English

Dr. Carol Bender, professor of English, has had a special interest in African-American literature since her guest professorship at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where the faculty she worked with had tremendous expertise in the subject. Much of her professional writing and scholarship focuses on black women writers such as Gwendolyn Brooks and Gloria Naylor.

Her other interest, women’s literature, stems from her curiosity in women’s studies, a program she and a colleague started at Alma in 1992.
