TV Commercial Earns National Gold Award

A 60-second Alma College television commercial that promotes the “Alma Experience“ has won a gold award in the 26th annual Educational Advertising Awards competition, sponsored by Higher Education Marketing Report, a national marketing publication for higher education professionals.

Produced and directed by 2010 Alma College graduate Vaughn Brines, the TV commercial packs more than 500 still images within a 60-second stop-motion storyline that illustrates the transforming opportunities that students have to learn and grow during their four years at Alma.

Brines worked with marketing, communications, admissions and advancement professional staff to coordinate the shooting of the 19 scenes depicting campus and residence hall life, academics, research with faculty, study abroad and community volunteerism. Many scenes include student extras and glimpses of Alma faculty and staff playing cameo roles.

The primary student actors in the commercial were 2010 graduates James Thomson of Lachine and Gabby Abrego of Rochester Hills.

The commercial, which received the gold award in the “single television advertising” category for colleges under 2,000 students, continues to air on cable network channels throughout Michigan. It also can be viewed on the Alma College Website and on the Alma College YouTube Channel.

In addition, Alma College received merit awards for its family of primary recruitment publications and a Christmas card designed for Athletics.

More than 2,500 entries were received from more than 1,000 colleges, universities and secondary schools from all 50 states and several foreign countries for the awards competition. A national panel of judges consisted of admissions marketers, advertising creative directors, marketing and advertising professionals, and the editorial board of Admissions Marketing Report.

Some people think French is the language of snoots and snobs. Others assume it’s only good for impressing dates. To Holly senior Josh Minshall, the language of love is “100-percent awesome sauce.”

“I’ve been taking French since 10th grade,” he says. “A lot of my friends took Spanish because they thought French would be too hard, but I stuck with it. I feel like I have a real knack for the language, and I speak it every day.”
