New Campus Safety Officer To Focus on Prevention

Campus safety, prevention and education will be the focus of a new community safety officer beginning March 1 as part of an agreement between Alma College and Alma City Police.

Alma Police Officer Jason Biehl, a 2002 Alma College graduate, will serve as a liaison between the City Police and the College, says Dave Buhl, vice president for business affairs at Alma College. Biehl will share an office in the Reid-Knox Administration Building.

“Dave Walsh, director of the Alma Police Department, has advocated for some time his desire for an enhanced partnership with the College for providing safety and prevention support,” says Buhl. “A major part of Officer Biehl’s work on the campus will focus on education, awareness, prevention and emergency planning.”

Officer Biehl has two years experience as a resource officer with Alma Public Schools, says Walsh.

“Alma is a safe, secure community, but things can and do happen,” says Walsh. “We are there to protect the students, faculty and staff and those who visit the campus for events and activities and to help the College plan for unforeseen events.”

The community safety officer will work with STT, the independent security firm hired by the College earlier this year to provide 24-hour campus security.

Alma College’s sports teams have been known as the “Scots” since 1931 when Alma students voted on the name. Soon thereafter, “Scotty” emerged as Alma’s official mascot and is regularly seen on campus, in the community and at athletics events.
