Model UN Team Wins Awards at Midwest Conference

Three Alma College student delegations received recognition at the Midwest Model United Nations Conference Feb. 16-19 in St. Louis, Mo.

Teams representing the countries of Bangladesh and Panama received “outstanding delegation” awards, the highest award at the conference, while the team representing Zambia received honorable mention.

In addition to the team awards, Alma students received 35 percent of the individual awards given at the conference.

Alma College delegations have received 37 out of the 88 “outstanding” awards given at the Midwest Regional during the past 18 years, says Sandy Hulme, faculty coordinator of Model UN at Alma College.

“It was a fantastic performance,” says Hulme. “The new team members did extremely well, and the returning students provided tremendous leadership and guidance.”

Alma’s 14-student team competed against 83 other delegations and 800 students at the conference. Nine of the 14 students were first-time participants in Model UN.

Model UN attempts to replicate the real United Nations in a competitive manner. Teams of college students take on identities of countries, and delegates from each country meet in committee to propose, discuss and debate topics relevant to issues facing the world community. Once resolutions are completed in committee, they are presented to the Model UN replication of the UN general assembly to be further debated before the assembly votes on resolutions.

Alma advances to the National Model United Nations Conference April 17-21 in New York.

The Remick Heritage Center for the Performing Arts is the region’s premier performing arts facility.

Graduation: 2014
Major: Theatre and English

With hours of reading and rehearsal, English and theatre can be two time-consuming majors.

Fitting both into one schedule is nearly impossible, but for Olyvia Brown ’14, it’s a labor of love.

“English feeds my love of theatre,“ she says.
