Students, Faculty Recognized at Honors Convocation

Alma College students and faculty were recognized for distinction during the 2010 Honors Day Convocation on April 1.

Kevin Everhart Named Outstanding Senior Leader

Kevin Everhart of Alma was awarded the 2010 Outstanding Senior Leadership Award. Students are nominated for the award by campus organizations, and a committee selects finalists. The winner is chosen by a vote from the senior class.

The other finalists for the award, which is sponsored by the Alma Leadership Alliance, were Melissa Andrews, Chris Duymich, Taylor Gibson, Martin Kuustik and Hannah Ropp.

Two Outstanding Seniors Recognized

Lacey Best-Rowden of Lansing and Jaimie Bolda of Port Austin received the Outstanding Senior Award, which is given annually to the graduating seniors with the highest grade point average.

Seniors Announce Clock as Class Gift

Martin Kuustik, president of the class of 2010, announced the senior class gift: A clock will be placed on South Campus to serve as a reminder of their time spent at Alma College and to aid other generations to find their time special as well.

Omicron Delta Kappa

Fifteen students were extended offers of membership in Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honorary:  Brandt Ayoub, Jeffrey Beck, Rachel Blackhurst, Shaina Buhl, Carolyn Commissaris, Kathleen Crombe, Matthew Davis, Noelle Evans, Brianna Harfmann, William McHenry, Kara Moser, Jennifer Nigro, Hannah Ropp, Susan Tapp and Brian Wagner.

Phi Beta Kappa

Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest academic honorary society in the United States, inducted seniors Stephanie Bens, Susan Bogner, David Burwell, Demi Gary, Emily Neil, Elaina Paulson, Hannah Ropp and Brian Wagner and juniors Jocelyn Ballast, Carolyn Commissaris, Marcy Gilstad, Miranda Hernandez, Christiana Hugo, Eleanor King, Michael Malloy, Kathryn Rice and Cory Schall.

President’s Cup Winners

The President’s Cup is awarded to students from each class who achieved the highest grade point averages. The winners for 2010 are:

• Juniors: Andrew Adan, Margo Brines, Marcy Gilstad and Ryan Spitler.

• Sophomores: Brittany Dixon and Dana Wygmans.

Outstanding Faculty Awards

The senior class recognized Carol Fike, Ed Lorenz and Murray Borrello with Outstanding Faculty Awards. In addition, faculty members Dana Aspinall and Tim Sipka were honored with Andison Excellence in Teaching Awards.

Senior class members vote on the Outstanding Faculty Awards, with a recognition chosen for each of the College’s academic divisions. The Andison Excellence in Teaching Awards, which celebrate Alma’s faculty who are committed to the College’s mission, are chosen by the president with the advice of the faculty personnel committee and the provost.

Kapp Prize

Montague senior Ian Harrier and Alma senior Hannah Ropp were awarded the Ronald O. Kapp Honors Day prize for their outstanding Honors Day presentations in the natural sciences and social sciences. ??Jamestown junior Ashley Zondlak was the recipient of the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society for best poster presentation.

The Kapp prize is named for the late Dr. Ronald O. Kapp, an Alma College biology professor for 32 years and vice president of academic affairs for 20 years.

Alma College is among the top 40 baccalaureate institutions in the country for the percentage of students who choose to study abroad, according to a report published by the Institute for International Education. Among Alma’s graduates in the 2009–10 academic year, 61.4 percent participated in study abroad, which ranked 37th in the nation.

The Grand Rapids junior, who is pursuing a career in medicine, recently completed hospital rotations at Mid Michigan Health Center—Gratiot. She says observing a patient with Parkinson’s disease was something she’ll never forget.
