Buhl Named Vice President for Finance, Administration

David Buhl, a former student Barlow Trophy winner and senior vice president with Comcast Corp., has been named vice president for finance and administration at Alma College.

Buhl’s appointment is effective June 2. He replaces Jerry Scoby, who resigned earlier this spring to accept another position.

“We are delighted to welcome back an alumnus with such extensive leadership experience,” says Alma College President Saundra Tracy. “David brings a rich and varied background as a senior level executive to this important position at Alma College.”

A 1979 graduate of Alma College, Buhl held various managerial positions with Ameritech/Michigan Bell in Detroit before joining Comcast Corporation in 1996 as director of customer service. He later was promoted to vice president for customer operations and vice president for customer service before assuming his most recent title in 2006. Comcast is a $1.7 billion Fortune 100 provider of cable, Internet and phone services. He has an MBA from Michigan State University.

Buhl also has had affiliations with various non-profit organizations, including Focus Hope, a Detroit area civil rights organization; the Detroit Chapter of the Urban League; Latino Family Services; Shrine High School Dad’s Club; and the St. Joan of Arc Athletic Board.

“I’ve known Alma College as a student, alumnus and parent,” says Buhl, whose daughter, Shaina, just completed her sophomore year. “This position allows me the opportunity to have a greater impact in ways that benefit the student experience, whether it is programs or facilities.”

Alma College launched a national search in January to fill the vacancy. A search committee chaired by Carol Hyble, vice president for advancement, reviewed more than 60 applications.

“David has a high energy level and the expertise to lead the College’s budget development process, oversee building construction projects, and provide finance and administration oversight,” says Hyble. “Plus, as an alumnus of Alma College, he has an understanding and enthusiasm for the mission of the College and the academic programs and experiences we provide our students.”

The vice president for finance and administration at Alma College is the chief administrator and advisor to the president in the areas of business affairs and management services, with oversight of the business office, human resources, physical plant, mailing and printing, conferences, bookstore and dining services.

Buhl has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Alma and in 1979 won the Barlow Trophy, Alma’s most prestigious award for a graduating senior recognizing academic achievement as well as contributions to campus and community.
