Two Earn 'Outstanding Senior Award' Recognition

ALMA, Mich. - Two Alma College seniors were awarded the Outstanding Senior Award during Honors Convocation on April 2 by Dr. Saundra J. Tracy, Alma's president. The students earned the honor by achieving the highest grade point average after seven terms at Alma.

Alma College, a four-year, liberal arts and sciences college in the middle of Michigan's lower peninsula, is known for its strong academic programs emphasizing a global perspective. Students actively engage in learning through original research projects, often addressing community issues. Founded in 1886 by the Presbyterian Church, Alma is regarded as one of the top liberal arts college in the country.

Senior Adam Sypniewski of Petoskey, who graduated from home school in 2005, is the son of Dr. Joseph and Mrs. Karen Sypniewski of Petoskey.

Senior Abigail Zukausky of Cadillac, who graduated from home school in 2004, is the daughter of Keith and Millie Zukausky of Cadillac.

Thirty-four percent of Alma students participate in intercollegiate athletics. Alma College competes at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the oldest existing athletic conference in the nation. Alma offers 22 varsity sports—11 for the women and 11 for the men—including four sports that debuted in 2011–12: women’s lacrosse and bowling and men’s lacrosse and wrestling.

Erin Pettijohn

Major: Biology

Before she came to Alma College, Erin Pettijohn was dead-set on becoming a crime scene investigator. After taking an introductory biology course, however, her passion for medical science came alive.

Since graduating in 2007, Pettijohn has successfully finished medical school. Soon she will begin her residency in internal medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. She hopes to pursue a career in oncology.

“Alma really gives you the opportunity to dream big,” she says. “Your degree will get your foot in the door of any occupation you desire, but more importantly, the well-rounded character and humanism you develop will set you apart and allow you to succeed once you get there.”
