Feminist Writer Headlines Women’s Month
Jessica Valenti, a feminist writer and seasoned activist for women’s rights, is the keynote speaker for Alma College’s Women’s Month celebration.
Valenti's talk begins at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 24
in the Remick Heritage Center. Admission is free and open to the
public. No ticket is required.
Also scheduled as part of Women's Month is the annual Take Back the
Night rally at 9 p.m. Monday, March 23 on the lawn of the Dunning
Memorial Chapel. The event protests against rape and other forms of
violence against women.

With
a master’s degree in women's and gender studies and a long record of
working with national and international women's organizations, Valenti
is the executive editor of the blog Feministing.com and author of Full Frontal Feminism: A Young Woman’s Guide to Why Feminism Matters.
Valenti is releasing her fourth book, The Purity Myth: How America's Obsession With Virginity is Hurting Young Women, in April. She also is the author of He's a Stud, She's a Slut...and 49 Other Double Standards Every Woman Should Know and the co-editor of a new book, Yes Means Yes: Visions of Female Sexual Power and A World Without Rape.
In her book, Full Frontal Feminism, Valenti covers a range of
topics, including pop culture, health, reproductive rights, violence,
education, relationships, and more.
In addition to her work at Feministing, Valenti is the editor of
“Beijing Betrayed,” a global monitoring report on women's progress
worldwide and a contributing author to We Don't Need Another Wave and Single State of the Union (Seal Press). Her writing has appeared in Ms. magazine, Salon and numerous other publications.
She has worked with organizations such as NARAL Pro-Choice America,
Legal Momentum (formerly NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund), Planned
Parenthood, the Women's Environment and Development Organization (WEDO)
and Ms. magazine. She is also a co-founder of the REAL Hot 100, a
campaign to highlight the important work that young women are doing
across the country.
In April 2007, Valenti was named one of ELLE magazine's IntELLEgentsia.
