‘Green’ Mayor of Greensburg To Discuss Sustainability

A national leader in promoting and implementing green technology and policy will discuss community sustainability in a public talk at Alma College.

Bob Dixson, mayor of Greensburg, Kansas, was spotlighted in President Obama’s speech before Congress last month. Dixson will speak at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 18 in the Dow Science Center Room L-1. Admission is free and open to the public.

Greensburg, which was decimated by a tornado in May 2007, has made a commitment to rebuild “green” at a level unprecedented in the United States, says Murray Borrello, director of Alma College’s Environmental Studies Program. The town has been the subject of a reality television series, directed by Leonardo di Caprio for Discovery Channel’s Green Network.

During his visit to Alma, Mayor Dixson will meet with Gratiot County officials who are working on a countywide land-use plan that includes sustainable development as a core value. He also will meet with local high school students.

Dixson’s visit to Alma is sponsored by Alma College’s Center for Responsible Leadership and the Environmental Studies Program and Greater Gratiot Development.
