Model UN Team Soars at Midwest Conference

Three Alma College student delegations received recognition at the 49th Midwest Model United Nations Conference Feb. 18-21 in St. Louis, Mo.

The delegations representing the countries of Guinea Bissau and Laos received “outstanding delegation” awards, while the team representing Antigua and Barbuda received honorable mention. In addition, 12 Alma students were recognized as outstanding and honorable mention delegates.

“We competed against 88 delegations from colleges and universities throughout the Midwest, and the Alma team did extremely well, receiving half of the individual ‘outstanding delegate’ awards and two out of five ‘outstanding delegation’ team awards,” said Derick Hulme, faculty coordinator of Model UN at Alma College.

“The team performed extraordinarily well. We had powerful contributions from both our first-time and veteran members,” said Hulme

Alma has now earned 33 of the 78 "outstanding delegation" awards given during the last 16 years of the conference, said Hulme.

Model UN attempts to replicate the real United Nations in a competitive manner. Teams of college students take on identities of countries, and delegates from each country meet in committee to propose, discuss and debate topics relevant to issues facing the world community. Once resolutions are completed in committee, they are presented to the Model UN replication of the UN general assembly to be further debated before the assembly votes on resolutions.

Alma now advances to the National Model United Nations Conference April 7-11 in New York.
