Trustees Grant Faculty Tenure, Emeriti Status
The Alma College Board of Trustees has approved tenure for two faculty members, effective with the 2009-10 academic year.
Dr. Mark Oemke, Assistant Professor of Biology, was awarded
tenure. Hired in 2002, Oemke has a Ph.D. from Michigan State
University. Aquatic organisms are his main area of expertise, including
macroinvertebrates, algae, fish, tracheophytes, and the phytoplankton
and zooplankton communities.

Dr. Laura von Wallmenich,
Assistant Professor of English, was awarded tenure. Hired in 2001,
Wallmenich has a Ph.D. from the University of Washington at Seattle.
Her areas of expertise include early American literature,
African-American and Native American literature, composition, and
interdisciplinary research and writing, especially American cultural
studies.

Trustees awarded emeriti status to the following retiring faculty:
Dr. Carol Slater, Charles A. Dana Professor of Psychology. Hired
in 1967, Slater has a bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College and
master’s degrees and Ph.D.s from both the University of Michigan and
Michigan State University. Her research interests have included social
cognition, language development and cognitive science.
Dr. Ute Stargardt, Charles A. Dana Professor of English. Hired
in 1982, Stargardt has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas
A&M University and a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee in
Knoxville. Her research interests have included medieval language and
literature, and Holocaust literature and film.
