Fraternities, Sororities Recruit New Members

Every year the fraternities and sororities at Alma College take the spotlight during Greek Recruitment Week. This year 58 women and 54 men went through formal recruitment and committed themselves to the Greek system.

“So many people are drawn to Greek Life because it offers camaraderie and emphasizes common goals and values,” says Campus Life Director Grant Woodman.  “It is a positive outlet for students who want to be involved on campus and be part of a social network that continues beyond college.”

The annual Fraternity Run Outs took place Jan. 24 in the Stone Recreation Center.

This year, Phi Mu Alpha joined Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Theta Kappa Epsilon, Theta Chi and Zeta Sigma as the sixth social fraternity on campus.

“This change has been positive for the campus since PMA offers a different perspective on Greek Life that has not been present before,” Woodman says. “PMA members all have an interest in music, and many of them are in music ensembles on campus.”

The annual Sorority Walk Outs took place Jan. 23 in the Stone Recreation Center.

Campus sororities include Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Xi Delta, Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Iota and Phi Sigma Sigma.

Twenty-four percent of Alma students were members of Greek organizations in 2007-08.
