Wellebration Promotes All Dimensions of Wellness

For the second consecutive year, Alma College students and community organizations will join forces for a health fair that celebrates all aspects of individual wellness.

The “Wellebration” takes place Tuesday, Sept. 30 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Alma College’s Stone Recreation Center. Representatives from student and local health organizations will be available to answer questions and provide informational handouts and demonstrations.

Admission is free and open to the public. The Alma College Counseling and Wellness Center sponsors the event.

Wellebration attendees in 2007 use a body mass index instrument.

Several community and campus organizations will participate in the fair, including Big Brothers Big Sisters and Rails to Trails from the community as well as Academic and Career Planning, Wilcox Medical Center, the Counseling and Wellness Center and other campus groups. Also in attendance will be a masseur giving free five-minute massages.

In addition, Red Cross will host a blood drive for students and community members during the fair.

The health fair will address the six dimensions of wellness: emotional, intellectual, occupational, physical, social and spiritual, says Jennifer Cary, Wellness Center counselor.

“The purpose of the fair is to promote health and wellness across our campus and in the community,” says Cary.

Student interns Allison Gibson and Amber Greco have helped in the organization of this year’s Wellebration.

For classically trained ballerina Cassie Haley, Alma College is as comfortable as a pair of worn-in pointe shoes.

“I love small schools, and Alma really fits,” she says. “When I met with the dance department and the other professors, it felt so inclusive. I could tell I belonged with the dance company from the start. We all love each other, and that makes dancing a lot of fun.”
