Alma College Kicks Off Community Fund Drive

Roy Roach, owner of Roach Realty in Alma, will serve as the 2008-09 chair of the Alma College Community Fund Drive.

The annual Community Fund Drive brings local volunteers together in support of Alma College. Last year, community businesses and individuals throughout Gratiot County raised more than $245,000.

Roach has served as a Community Fund Drive volunteer for more than 30 years and is serving as chair for the second time — the first time was at the invitation of former Alma College President Robert Swanson. Roach will coordinate a group of 19 volunteers who will solicit pledges during the campaign.

“Roy and his wife Nora have served as loyal supporters of Alma College for more than 30 years, and we appreciate his willingness to serve as Community Fund Chair for the second time,” said Brandan Snook, director of community relations and advancement associate.

Gifts may be designated to the “Alma Fund,” special programs, departments, endowment growth and building campaigns.

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term 2012, students observed lizards in Bermuda, studied modern economic development in India, performed dance in Taiwan, examined renewable energy in Europe and investigated medicinal plants in the Amazon rainforest.

After quitting cheer in high school, Belleville senior Jaycee Nelson thought she had hung up her pom-poms for good. But when she came to Alma College, she decided to give the sport another try.

“Cheer is a lot of hard work, but it’s also very rewarding,” she says. “The team is one of my strongest support groups on campus, and we have a lot of fun together.”
