Second City Makes Return Visit to Alma

Cutting-edge improvisation, hilarious satire and a chance to see comedy stars in the making will highlight a performance of The Second City Friday, Sept. 12 at Alma College.

The legendary comedy troupe from Chicago will perform at 8 p.m. in the Remick Heritage Center. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and free for Alma College staff, students and youth 18 and under. Seating is reserved. Call (989) 463-7304 for ticket information. Tickets go on sale Sept. 4.

The Second City performed last year at Alma College to rave reviews, prompting a return trip to campus.

“The troupe sold old last year, and the community asked us to bring them back,” says Michael Sheldon, technical director of the Remick Heritage Center. “They put on a fantastic show about current events that was well attended by both the community and students.”

No topic or subject matter is off limits for The Second City. The presidential election and other topics from the worlds of politics, entertainment and media are fair game.

“Expect topical humor that is a little adult oriented, and expect to laugh a whole lot,” says Sheldon. “There will be a whole new cast performing this year. If you attended last year, come back because you will see a completely new show.”

Founded in Chicago in 1959, The Second City has become the premier training ground for the comedy world’s best and brightest performers. The alumni list reads like a who’s who of American comedy, including Alan Arkin, Joan Rivers, Robert Klein, Peter Boyle, John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Martin Short, John Candy, Tim Meadows, Chris Farley, Mike Meyers, Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Horatio Sanz and countless others.

Alma’s close faculty-student interaction provides numerous benefits such as the ability to do undergraduate research on a graduate level. Alma’s professors treat students more as peers welcoming student input and collaboration on faculty projects. When students are involved in research, faculty aggressively pursue publication of findings including students as co-authors.
