The world premiere of “Concerto for Steel Drum” by Chad Stoltenberg and a special guest appearance by the Alma High School Percussion Ensemble will highlight the annual spring performance of the Alma College Percussion Ensemble.

The Alma College Chamber Ensemble and the World Music, Jazz and Steel Drum Ensemble will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 12 and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 13 in the Remick Heritage Center. The Chamber Ensemble will perform Chamber Piece for Percussion Quintet by Michael Colgrass, Concerto for Piano and Percussion Ensemble by David Gillingham featuring soloist Justin Rito,  “Xylophonia” by Joe Green, and Concerto for Steel Drum featuring soloist Stephen Lawhorne.

“The Concerto for Steel Drum was created to help show the lead steel drum’s versatility as an instrument within the context of Western art music,” according to notes by the composer.

The second half of the program features The World Music, Jazz and Steel Drum Ensemble performing Prelude II by George Gershwin, “Bouncin’ With Bud” by Bud Powell, “Take Five” by Paul Desmond, “Dancing Men” by John LaBarbera, and “Sledgehammer” by Peter Gabriel.

In a guest appearance, the Alma High School Percussion Ensemble, directed by Timothy Newman, will perform “Teamwork” by Lynn Glassock.

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble, founded in 1989 by David Zerbe, is a multi-faceted performance ensemble. Recent appearances include the 2008 Notre Dame Jazz Festival and the 2007 Port Townsend Jazz Festival.

Students conducting research side-by-side with faculty has been an Alma legacy for generations. Alma students team up with faculty on scholarly research or to collaborate on creative or performing arts projects. An annual Honors Day features student presentations, performances and exhibits. Many students present such work at regional, national and international meetings.
