Model UN Delegations Garner Top Awards

Two Alma College student delegations received recognition at the 48th Midwest Model United Nations Conference Feb. 13-16 in St. Louis, Mo.

The stsudent delegation representing the country of Ecuador received an “outstanding delegation” award, while the team representing Zambia received honorable mention.

“The Midwest Conference is the preeminent regional collegiate Model UN conference, with approximately 700 students competing on behalf of 81 delegations from colleges and universities throughout the Midwest,” said Derick Hulme, faculty coordinator of Model UN at Alma College.

“Alma students performed extremely well. They won 50 percent of the individual awards for the entire conference, as well as one of the three outstanding delegation awards and one of the three honorable mention awards,” he said.

Alma has now earned 31 of the 73 "outstanding" awards given during the last 15 years of the conference, said Hulme.

In addition, seven Alma students were recognized as outstanding delegates and eight students received honorable mention delegate recognition.

Model UN attempts to replicate the real United Nations in a competitive manner. Teams of college students take on identities of countries, and delegates from each country meet in committee to propose, discuss and debate topics relevant to issues facing the world community. Once resolutions are completed in committee, they are presented to the Model UN replication of the UN general assembly to be further debated before the assembly votes on resolutions.

Alma now advances to the National Model United Nations Conference March 18-22 in New York.
