Relay For Life Raises More Than $28,700

Alma's Third Annual Relay for Life raised more than $28,700 for the American Cancer Society. Fund-raising efforts will continue through the the winter term to reach the $35,000 goal.

Individuals and 35 teams of students, faculty, staff, local high school students and cancer survivors — more than 300 participants — spent 24 hours Feb. 9 and 10 in the Stone Recreation Center walking the track, competing in contests and hanging out.

 

The top fund-raising team was the faculty/staff team, which raised $2,982. Other teams recognized in competitions were Alpha Xi Delta, Zeta Sigma, Gamma Phi Beta, Phi Sigma Sigma, Bruske Bunch, Naked Time and Volleyball.

In four years, Alma College has raised nearly $120,000 for the American Cancer Society through the Relay for Life events.

 

 

 

Thirty-four percent of Alma students participate in intercollegiate athletics. Alma College competes at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the oldest existing athletic conference in the nation. Alma offers 22 varsity sports—11 for the women and 11 for the men—including four sports that debuted in 2011–12: women’s lacrosse and bowling and men’s lacrosse and wrestling.

Between bad luck and broken bones, the time that Gwendolyn Greer spent in the emergency room while growing up has proved to be inspiring.

“In middle school, I broke my arm, and I also had a lot of knee problems,” she says. “I was really curious to learn about what was wrong with me and what situations brought other people to the hospital as well. I’ve wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon ever since.”
