Eisenhower Ensemble Shares Week of Dance

Renowned choreographer Laurie Eisenhower and members of her professional contemporary dance troupe will jazz up February during their weeklong residency at Alma College.

The Eisenhower Dance Ensemble will share its expertise with Alma students and community members during a weeklong residency Feb. 3 through 9, culminating with a public performance at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 in the Remick Heritage Center. Tickets are $10 for adults and free for Alma College staff, students, and youth 18 and under. Seating is reserved. Call (989) 463-7304 for ticket information.

“The Eisenhower Dance Ensemble is exquisite, prolific and energizing,” says Carol Fike, associate professor of theatre and dance at Alma College. “We are very excited to have her company with us for the week. It allows our dancers to work with professionals in their field.”

In addition to working alongside the professional dancers, several Alma College students will be selected to dance during the Eisenhower Dance Ensemble’s performance of the mysterious, beautiful and evocative “Catharsis,” set to the music of Peter Gabriel.

“The Eisenhower Dance Ensemble tends to use really interesting music, clever choreography and amazing creativity in their dances,” says Fike. “They are beautiful, exciting and meaningful — and intelligent; they make you think.”

The Eisenhower Dance Ensemble’s weeklong residence also offers opportunities to local residents. Community master classes led by Eisenhower dancers will be offered to local students, dancers and interested community members prior to the Feb. 9 performance. Classes consist of strength and conditioning exercises, as well as creative movement activities that incorporate basic elements of dance such as space, shape, time, direction, level, speed, motion and gesture. Call Fike at (989) 463-7242 for more information.

Artistic director Laurie Eisenhower founded the Eisenhower Dance Ensemble in the summer of 1991 in metropolitan Detroit. Now in its 17th year, EDE is a professional repertory company based in Rochester Hills that tours nationally and has consistently received critical acclaim and enthusiastic audience support.

In addition to featuring premiere professional dancers and a diverse range of contemporary dance works, EDE provides world-class dance instruction to students of all ages and levels of ability.
