Students Raise Awareness on Dangers of Smoking

Members of the Colleges Against Cancer student organization participated in a Great American Smoke Out demonstration Thursday, Nov. 15 by lying on the ground for two to three minutes to illustrate how many people die from tobacco use.

The activity took place on McIntyre Mall on the Alma College campus during class change time. The organization also posted flyers and planted 160 white flags on campus to illustrate the number of people who die every minute from smoking or from second-hand smoke.

Alma College ranks second in the nation in the percentage of students who participate in alternative break service trips, according to Break Away, the national organization that supports the development of alternative break experiences that inspire lifelong active citizenship. Last year, Alma students provided flood relief, built affordable homes, planned activities for terminally ill children, constructed wheelchair ramps, worked with immigrants, and assisted in after-school programs.
