WELLebration Health Fair Promotes Wellness

Alma College students and community organizations will join forces for a health fair that celebrates all aspects of individual wellness.

The first WELLebration will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9 at Alma College’s Stone Recreation Center. Representatives from student and local health organizations will be available to answer questions and provide informational handouts and demonstrations.

The event is sponsored by the Alma College Counseling and Wellness Center. Admission is free and open to the community.

The health fair will address the seven dimensions of wellness: physical, intellectual, emotional, occupational, social, spiritual and environmental, said Cori Wagner, event organizer and a graduate student in the Counseling and Wellness Center

“We are hoping to get a large turnout at this first annual event,” said Wagner. “The reaction we have had from interested student groups and local wellness-focused businesses has been incredible.

“It will be a great opportunity for families to get tips on improving their overall wellness,” she said.

At 1:30 p.m., Ithaca dentist Dale Nester will present information regarding dental health and its relationship to overall system health. WELLebration attendees also can participate in organized games and karaoke and try out the Nintendo Wii.

Other expected participants include Curves, Pregnancy Services and Big Brothers Big Sisters from the Alma community and the Exercise and Health Science Honorary, Academic and Career Planning office, and Colleges Against Cancer from Alma College.

Assisting Wagner with the planning of WELLebration are student interns Sami Spedoske, a senior from DeWitt, and Amber Greco, a junior from Mount Pleasant.

Alma’s off-campus study programs do more than place students in exciting locales to meet interesting people; they also create new opportunities for personal growth and skill development. One of the best ways to learn about other societies and cultures is to study and travel in international settings. You do not always have to know a foreign language.
