Second City Presents 'One Nation Under Blog'

Funny moments mixed with songs and seat-of-your-pants humor will highlight a back-to-school performance of The Second City, Chicago’s legendary comedy troupe, at Alma College.

The Second City will perform in the Remick Heritage Center at 8 p.m. Sept. 15. Tickets are $10 for adults and free for Alma College staff, students and youth 18 and under. Seating is reserved. Tickets go on sale Sept. 4. Call (989) 463-7304 for ticket information.

Audience members will see comedy stars in the making along with cutting-edge satire and improvisation. No topic or subject matter is off limits for The Second City.

“If your parents asked you not to speak about it at the dinner table, chances are it will be made fun of in an evening with The Second City,” says Michael Sheldon, technical director of the Remick Heritage Center.

“It will be a fun event to start the school year,” says Sheldon. “The program is smart and funny. Improvisational comedy is a hilarious form of humor that one normally would have to go to a big city comedy club to experience.”

The group’s newest touring show, “One Nation Under Blog,” mines comedy from the day’s headlines and the worlds of politics, entertainment and media. The performance also will feature some of the best sketches, songs and improvisations from The Second City’s more than 45-year history.

Founded in Chicago in 1959, The Second City has become the premier training ground for the comedy world’s best and brightest performers. The alumni list reads like a who’s who of American comedy, including Alan Arkin, Joan Rivers, Peter Boyle, John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Martin Short, John Candy, Tim Meadows, Chris Farley, Mike Meyers, Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Horatio Sanz and countless others.

Alma’s off-campus study programs do more than place students in exciting locales to meet interesting people; they also create new opportunities for personal growth and skill development. One of the best ways to learn about other societies and cultures is to study and travel in international settings. You do not always have to know a foreign language.
