Student Presentations Examine World Religions

A pair of public presentations on world religions will take place at Alma College.

Students in Kathryn Blanchard’s “Introduction to World Religions” class will make two identical presentations on Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Judaism and Islam from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 10 and 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 11 in the Dunning Memorial Chapel at Alma College.

“The course was designed with a service learning component, whereby teams of students, who are mostly from Christian backgrounds, are becoming ‘expert-learners’ in a religious tradition other than Christianity in order that they might then teach others,” says Blanchard.

The students will give brief presentations, followed by informal posters sessions and refreshments. Attendance is free and open to the public.

Sara Sawinski’s first taste of philanthropy came as a child when her family volunteered with a church ministry to help homeless families. Since then, her passion for service has only grown.

The sociology major has used her time at Alma College to figure out which areas of service she likes most, and she says she has found no shortage of opportunities to help others.

“This past summer, I volunteered at a women’s shelter, which really confirmed my desire to go into social work,” she says.
