Relay for Life Raises $32,000

Alma's Third Annual Relay for Life raised more than $32,000 for the American Cancer Society. Individuals and 29 teams of students, faculty, staff and cancer survivors, total 315 participants, spent 24 hours March 24 and 25 in the Stone Recreation Center walking the track, competing in contests and hanging out. In three years, Alma College has raised nearly $100,000 for the American Cancer Society through the Relay for Life events.

Heather Hertema

Major: Biochemistry

Dry ice balloons, liquid nitrogen ice cream and methane bubbles. These are a few of the things Heather Hertema ’02 uses to make a difference in the lives of children.

Inspired by her experiences at Alma College, Hertema, who recently earned a doctorate in pharmacy from the University of California, San Francisco, fused her passions for service and science to create a summer science camp.
