Gala Benefit Musicale to Raise Money for Student Scholarships

Alma College Music Department faculty and friends will present a Gala Benefit Musicale at 8 p.m. Oct. 28 in the Remick Heritage Center to raise money for music student scholarships.

“The concert is billed as a delightful evening of classical and popular favorites as performed by Alma College faculty and friends,” said Murray Gross, director of the Alma Symphony Orchestra. “It should be a very enjoyable and fun evening.”

Tickets are $20 for general seating and can be purchased from the Heritage Center Box Office or directly from Alma Symphony Orchestra Council members. Concert proceeds will help fund music student scholarships. For ticket information, call (989) 463-7304.

The program will include faculty performances by saxophonist Jonathan Nichol, percussionist David Zerbe and pianists Jeff Kressler, Anthony Patterson, Raymond Riley and Murray Gross. Also performing will be guitarist Roger Humphrey, the Quartet con Spirito and the vocal ensemble Trillium.

The performance will include “The Blues Walk” by Clifford Brown; Three Preludes by Gershwin; “The Garden of Love” by Jacob ter Veldius; a set of traditional songs; and various classical works by Mozart, Dvorak and others.

Students conducting research side-by-side with faculty has been an Alma legacy for generations. Alma students team up with faculty on scholarly research or to collaborate on creative or performing arts projects. An annual Honors Day features student presentations, performances and exhibits. Many students present such work at regional, national and international meetings.

Alma’s close faculty-student interaction provides numerous benefits such as the ability to do undergraduate research on a graduate level. Alma’s professors treat students more as peers welcoming student input and collaboration on faculty projects. When students are involved in research, faculty aggressively pursue publication of findings including students as co-authors.
