Gala Benefit Musicale to Raise Money for Student Scholarships

Alma College Music Department faculty and friends will present a Gala Benefit Musicale at 8 p.m. Oct. 28 in the Remick Heritage Center to raise money for music student scholarships.

“The concert is billed as a delightful evening of classical and popular favorites as performed by Alma College faculty and friends,” said Murray Gross, director of the Alma Symphony Orchestra. “It should be a very enjoyable and fun evening.”

Tickets are $20 for general seating and can be purchased from the Heritage Center Box Office or directly from Alma Symphony Orchestra Council members. Concert proceeds will help fund music student scholarships. For ticket information, call (989) 463-7304.

The program will include faculty performances by saxophonist Jonathan Nichol, percussionist David Zerbe and pianists Jeff Kressler, Anthony Patterson, Raymond Riley and Murray Gross. Also performing will be guitarist Roger Humphrey, the Quartet con Spirito and the vocal ensemble Trillium.

The performance will include “The Blues Walk” by Clifford Brown; Three Preludes by Gershwin; “The Garden of Love” by Jacob ter Veldius; a set of traditional songs; and various classical works by Mozart, Dvorak and others.

Alma College is one of the first undergraduate colleges in the United States to belong to the International Criminal Court Student Network (ICCSN). Created in 2006 by students at the London School of Economics, the ICCSN aims to promote the work of the ICC and increase knowledge of international criminal law. Alma joins Duke University School of Law, the University of Cambridge and other institutions in a global community that connects students who share an interest in the ICC.

Even at a young age, Kerry Dembowski Bryan ’09 knew that she was destined for a career in education.

“When I was 7, I got a letter from my teacher before school started,” she says. “I remember telling my mom that when I was a teacher, I would send out letters, too. Since then, my passion has never changed. I love working with children.”
