Friends Form Final Gauntlet

Friends, Alma College alumni, students, College Trustees, current and former faculty, administrators and staff form a gauntlet down Superior Street in front of the College as the funeral procession of former College President Dr. Robert Swanson procedes towards the cemetery. The gauntlet is an Alma College tradition of graduates traversing a lineup of faculty offering best wishes. Swannie, as he was affectionatetly nicknamed, was remembered with a service in Dunning Memorial Chapel attended by family, friends, College Trustees, and many people who worked during the administration of the ninth president of Alma College from 1956 through 1980. Following his retirement, Swannie remained involved with the College and in the Gratiot community.

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. “It’s a huge honor,” says faculty director Dave Zerbe. “You can’t apply to perform there; they seek you out.”
