Alma College Names New Alumni Director

A Michigan politics public relations specialist with extensive experience in management, fund raising, programming and alliance building has been named director of alumni relations at Alma College.

Brent Neubecker, a 1995 graduate of Alma, will begin his new duties July 5. He replaces Bob Eldridge, who is retiring after 17 years with the College.

“The opportunity to come back to Alma in this capacity is very exciting,” said Neubecker. “Every alumnus I talk to only has great things to say about Alma.

“I will be very active in reaching out to our alumni in order to make sure they know no matter how long they have been away from Alma, they will always be welcomed back,” he said. “I also want to make a constant effort of reaching out to our current students in order to establish that relationship long before they move on with their professional careers."

As a public relations specialist for Michigan House Republicans since 2003, Neubecker manages public relations activities for select state representatives, coordinates fund-raising events, establishes partnerships with community leaders and organizations, creates newsletters and legislative updates for the public, and monitors and analyzes legislative voting activity. Previously, he worked as district director and director of constituent service for Congressman Dave Camp in Midland.

“Brent has demonstrated a tremendous work ethic, strong judgment, proven relationship-building skills and the ability to plan, prioritize and manage complex projects in his previous positions,” said Carol Hyble, vice president for advancement at Alma College.  “We are extremely fortunate to be able to bring him back to Alma to oversee our alumni programs and serve as a liaison for our more than 12,000 living graduates.”

Neubecker has a bachelor of liberal arts degree in history and political science from Alma. He is completing a master’s degree in public administration at Central Michigan University.

“Alma has a great tradition of remembering their graduates, and I want to continue that endeavor,” said Neubecker.

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. “It’s a huge honor,” says faculty director Dave Zerbe. “You can’t apply to perform there; they seek you out.”

Alma’s off-campus study programs do more than place students in exciting locales to meet interesting people; they also create new opportunities for personal growth and skill development. One of the best ways to learn about other societies and cultures is to study and travel in international settings. You do not always have to know a foreign language.
