Alma Students Helping Saginaw Blitz Build
Alma College students enrolled in Dr. Brian Stratton's Spring Term course "Bible and Society" are preparing a volunteer center at 1202 Sheridan Avenue in Saginaw for the June 2006 Saginaw Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build.
Stratton and the students travel daily to Saginaw May 15 - 19 to work on the center. The project is incorporated into the course as part of Alma's service learning component.
Saginaw Habitat for Humanity has scheduled an ambitious two-week building barrage starting June 9 and ending June 24 with a celebration and habitation ceremony. Habitat’s tenth annual blitz build aims to construct five homes with the help of more than 1,000 volunteers. The home sites are in a neighborhood where the 1998, 1999 and 2005 blitz builds occurred when more than 1,000 volunteers came together each summer for two weeks.
Juliann Schaffer, Alma's AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteer, helped coordinate the project with Debra Drake-Davis, Saginaw Habitat for Humanity volunteer coordinator.
