Trustee, Alumnus Appointed to Circuit Court

Judge John Foster '67, Alma Board of Trustees member since 2001, has been appointed by Governor Jennifer Granholm to fill a vacancy on the Macomb County Circuit Court bench.

While his appointment was widely predicted by legal observers, Foster told a Macomb Daily reporter he was surprised, refusing to believe rumors until the call came from the Governor.

A long-time resident of Mt. Clemens, Foster had been a judge on the 41B District Court for 15 years after serving as Macomb County's corporation counsel for five years. Active in the Democratic party, he was helped by endorsements from five elected county officials.

Court observers, according to the Macomb Daily, consider Foster "a fair-minded, deliberate judge who in criminal cases has questioned the prosecution's case."

Foster had to take his seat on the Circuit Court bench before Tuesday, May 16, in order to be considered the incumbent in this year's elections.

An ordained minister, his responsibilities on Alma's Board include the committees for Planning and Evaluation and Enrollment and Marketing.

Maybe it’s seeing your name on the cast list. What about the butterflies in your stomach as the curtain goes up? For Shelby Schroeder, the best part of a theatre production is when it’s over.

“I love the part after the show when you’re able to see people’s reactions to your performance, especially when you’re really able to move someone,” she says. “Knowing that you did a good job and that all your hard work really meant something are such strong feelings.”
