Presbyterian Church Moderator to Visit the College

Rick Ufford-Chase, general assembly moderator of the Presbyterian Church (USA), will visit the Alma College campus on March 11 for lunch and a presentation.

Guests from campus and the community are welcome. A buffet lunch at 12:30 p.m. costs $8, while the 1:30 p.m. presentation is free. The lunch and presentation will take place in the Van Dusen Commons.

Lunch reservations are requested by March 8; call 463-7981 or send an e-mail to . Alma College students will be able to use their meal cards for lunch and not pay extra.

The moderator’s visit is part of the Alma Youth Mix, a senior high youth event sponsored by Alma College and the Lake Michigan and Lake Huron Presbyteries. For more information, visit the Alma Youth Mix Web site.

Ufford-Chase was elected moderator of the 216th General Assembly in 2004. He is the founder of BorderLinks, a bi-national organization that tries to connect and educate people of faith on both sides of the U.S. /Mexico border. He also works with the Evangelical Center for Pastoral Studies in Guatemala and has been a co-moderator of Presbyterian Peace Fellowship.

 

Alma College is among the top 40 baccalaureate institutions in the country for the percentage of students who choose to study abroad, according to a report published by the Institute for International Education. Among Alma’s graduates in the 2009–10 academic year, 61.4 percent participated in study abroad, which ranked 37th in the nation.

Kelsey Hughes ’09 was attracted to Alma College’s biochemistry program like a proton is attracted to an electron.

“I’ve always sort of been on the border right between chemistry and biology, so biochemistry was the perfect combination of both of my interests,” she says. “Alma also felt right to me. As soon as I set foot on campus, I felt at home. When I visited with professors and students, that feeling was only reinforced.”
