A Sunday picnic Sept. 11 kicks off Alma College's fourth annual Service Week. The week provides opportunities for community non-profits and student service groups to recruit volunteers for the academic year.

Gratiot County service organizations provide information on ways students can volunteer their time and talents in the community. Established College student groups conduct service projects during the week as examples of the types of projects they undertake during the year.

Students participating in off-campus service projects during the Winter Term break begin planning trips Monday and summer interns participating in the Discovering Vocation Project report their experiences Tuesday. Students Offering Service (SOS) meet Tuesday to brainstorm the year's projects and focus on Hurricane Katrina disaster relief efforts.

Students sponsor Community Cafe at First Presbyterian Church in Alma Thursday and throughout the year through meal donations from their meal plans and by preparing and serving meals provided by Sodexho Food Service, the College's dining service.

The College's e2e Mentoring program established with a grant from Michigan Campus Compact, gets started with training for faculty and staff mentors who will be mentoring Alma Middle School students. Under the theme "Share What You Know, Become a Mentor" volunteers exchange weekly e-mails with mentees to listen, encourage and share what mentors have learned about life.

The week ends Saturday with the Adopt a Highway cleanup project sponsored by Alpha Phi Omega national service fraternity and Alpha Gamma Delta social sorority.
