Wet Behind the Ears; New Students Arrive

Wet behind the ears is a good term to describe the newest Alma College first-year students. They arrived in a driving rain Saturday. But with help from parents, siblings and College staff and students, they moved clothes and computers, snacks and stuff into their residence hall rooms.

After lunch and a welcoming convocation, they began their exciting college experience. The 2005 Preterm running from Aug. 27-Sept. 5 helps the new students familiarize themselves with Alma's offerings and services, meet other first-year students and embark on a journey of engaged learning.

The week's activities conclude Friday, Sept. 2, with the annual Traditions Dinner where the first-year students receive a pine tree that symbolizes a new start rich with Alma College  heritage. A Labor Day picnic brings the new students together with the rest of the student body, faculty and staff before Fall Term classes begin Sept. 6.

Bob Devaney, a 1939 graduate of Alma College, went on to become known as one of the greatest coaches in collegiate football history. In his 11 years as head coach at Nebraska, Devaney produced 11 winning seasons with two national championships. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1981. At Alma he played end and was the Scots’ Most Valuable Player in 1938.
