Klumpp Appointed Vice President for Enrollment
Dr. Karen Klumpp"Karen's excellent leadership in conjunction with the talents and efforts of her staff have generated a 2005-06 enrollment that is our best in several years," said Alma College President Saundra Tracy. "Equally important are the many longer term strategies that have been put in place for succeeding years."
Klumpp has served the College in many capacities since 1978 when she was hired as a secretary. During her employment, she graduated from Alma College, earned a Master's of Business Administration degree from Central Michigan University and completed her doctorate at Michigan State University.
"I am delighted with the opportunity to continue my work with Alma College in this new capacity. Through engaged learning and personalized education, our students become graduates who make a difference in the world," Klumpp says. "The transformative educational opportunities at Alma College allow students to achieve more than they ever thought possible."
Klumpp's belief in Alma mirrors her career success at Alma. Since receiving her degree from Alma in 1987, she became assistant registrar in 1988, associate registrar in 1992 and registrar in 1994. She was promoted to assistant provost in 1999 and associate provost in 2003. She was the interim director of admission in fall 2003 and interim vice president for enrollment since October 2004.
Bill Potter, former associate provost at Alma and Klumpp's mentor, said Klumpp is "exceptionally well-qualified" for the position. "She is a valued and trusted colleague among faculty and staff across the campus and has a fine reputation among her peer network in Michigan" he said. "She understands and appreciates Alma's heritage. I am confident that the gains achieved during the current year under Karen's interim leadership will provide a solid base for continued enrollment growth at Alma in the future."
Besides Potter, Klumpp includes the late Ron Kapp, former provost and vice president for academic affairs, among her mentors. As Kapp's executive secretary, he encouraged her to get her bachelor's degree and Potter became her academic advisor.
Besides enrollment, the vice president for enrollment is also responsible for financial aid services and retention of current students.
