Strosacker Grant Enables Web Portal

Alma College has been awarded a grant of $243,000 from the Charles J. Strosacker Foundation of Midland to improve technology on campus.

The grant enables the creation of a Web portal for the campus. A Web portal is an application that provides access to a wide range of Web-based tools in one place at one time. David Reed, director of Information Technology, says, "It will provide better information in a timelier manner for students, faculty and staff."

The portal provides user-specific tools such as cafeteria menus for the students or meeting reminders for staff, while providing basics, such as a calendar and events, to all. The college plans to have the initial Web portal up by early Winter Term and hopes to install such features as online registration and bill paying. Reed added, "We're fortunate to get a significant grant so it's not coming out of operating funds."

Sally Bowen, grants coordinator, said, "The College has wanted to do this for a long time, but it wasn't something we were able to do. Funding for this is wonderful and it will further connect students on campus. We're extremely grateful for the funding and that they (the foundation) believe so strongly in Alma College and our students."

The Foundation and the College have a long-standing relationship that continues to grow with this gift.
