Newson Recognized by Alma College

Kim Newson, owner of Alma True Value Hardware, received a plaque of appreciation Saturday, Oct. 23, from Alma College President Saundra Tracy during the college's annual Community Appreciation Day.

Newson, the 2004-2005 Community Fund Drive Chair, coordinated with 26 community volunteers to raise money by October 1, 2004, designated for the ALMA FUND, special programs, departments, endowment growth, and/or building campaigns. Last academic year, the generosity of local friends, businesses, alumni, parents, and churches resulted in gifts totaling $1,259,418 to the College.

Alma's scholarship and financial aid program is helping 127 local students attend Alma Fall Term 2004.

Even though rain fell steadily throughout the day, the appreciation picnic conducted in the Hogan Physical Education Center stayed dry and the Scots took care of Kalamazoo College 38-14 in the football game. The men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to nationally-ranked Calvin College.

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term 2012, students observed lizards in Bermuda, studied modern economic development in India, performed dance in Taiwan, examined renewable energy in Europe and investigated medicinal plants in the Amazon rainforest.
