Posey Awards Presented to Faculty, Administrator

Alma College awarded five Lee and Sally Posey Awards for Administrative and Faculty Excellence on Thursday, September 9 during the College's Opening Convocation.

Four Posey Awards were presented to members of the faculty: Dr. Elizabeth Cameron, professor of business administration; Dr. Timm Thorsen, professor of sociology; Dr. Bob Vivian, assistant professor of English; and Mr. Steven Vest, associate professor of library science. The College presented one Posey Award for Administrative Excellence to Mr. Mark Bunce, science laboratory coordinator. Each recipient is awarded a $2,500 bonus and $2,500 for research and/or professional development.

Lee and Sally Posey of Addison, and 1956 graduates of the College, donated the funds to establish the award in 1998. Lee, a former Trustee of Alma College is the chair and founder of Palm Harbor Homes, one of the largest pre-fabricated home companies in the United States. The Poseys established the awards to recognize exemplary performance in one or more of the areas of teaching, scholarship and service to the College.

Cameron, who was nominated in every category, has published articles in academic and professional publications. She is highly valued as an advisor and professor to her students and is well known for her service to the College and the community.

Thorsen was nominated in the area of service. He is chair of the sociology department and has been on many College committees and local, regional and national trustee boards. According to his nominator, Thorsen continually works to build a better College community.

Vivian was honored for his achievement as a creative writer. He has received numerous awards for writing creative nonfiction and one essay was nominated as one of the best American essays in 2003.

Vest was nominated for his service to the College community. He helps both students and faculty in their library searches for sources through many different media.

Bunce was nominated for his contribution to the College and the local community. Mr. Bunce implements ideas for more effective teaching on campus and often gives science demonstrations at the local schools.

Students conducting research side-by-side with faculty has been an Alma legacy for generations. Alma students team up with faculty on scholarly research or to collaborate on creative or performing arts projects. An annual Honors Day features student presentations, performances and exhibits. Many students present such work at regional, national and international meetings.

Alma’s off-campus study programs do more than place students in exciting locales to meet interesting people; they also create new opportunities for personal growth and skill development. One of the best ways to learn about other societies and cultures is to study and travel in international settings. You do not always have to know a foreign language.
