Davila Spreads Word of Peace

Reverend Mendelson Dávila, an ordained Presbyterian minister and International Peacemaker from Nicaragua, brings his message of peace to Alma College. On Sunday October 10, Reverend Davila will be preaching in Dunning Memorial Chapel.

The chapel service is open to the public. During the following week Reverend Davila will be conducting discussions with various Spanish and music classes, while dining with many student and faculty groups. His visit coincides with the end of International Peacemaker Week.

Reverend Mendelson Dávila is the Coordinator of the Reconciliation and Mission Program for Central America and Mexico. He also is a member of an eight-person commission that creates religious guide materials for both pastors and lay leaders of the Nicaraguan Presbyterian Church. A talented singer and guitarist, Dávila also founded the renowned group in Nicaragua called the Apostol, which writes and performs music sharing messages of the Christian faith.

In the more than 125 years since its founding, Alma College has stayed true to its roots by keeping its Scottish heritage alive. Today, Alma features a marching band clad in kilts, a Scottish dance troupe, a competitive pipe band and its own tartan. Each year, the College hosts the Alma Highland Festival and Games, which feature traditional Scottish games and revelry.

When she was still an Alma College student, Katie Matonich’s advice to students was “to remember that being an English major isn’t all rainbows and sunshine, but it’s what makes writing about rainbows and sunshine fun!”

Now, as the development coordinator for the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, she seems to have found her pot of gold.
