Percussion Ensemble to Perform at Detroit Jazz Fest

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Dave Zerbe, and The Hohner Institute "Percussion Works Project," under the direction of Jeff White, will perform at the 2004 Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival at noon, Monday, September 6th.

Billed as the largest free jazz festival in North America, The festival takes place this year Sept. 4-6 at Hart Plaza in Downtown Detroit. Each year, the Jazz Festival showcases widely known international stars, significant new and emerging artists, plus the region's and the city's top professionals and award- winning high school and college groups from around the state.

The Percussion Ensemble and the Hohner Institute combine forces to perform on the Ford Motor Company Amphitheater stage. In a one-hour concert, the group will perform Pat Metheny's "Last Train Home;" and "The Gathering Sky;" Stevie Wonder's "I Wish;" and Miles Davis' "All Blues."

The ensemble's set also includes pieces by Mike Maneiri, Barry Miles, Bela Flek, Eddie Palmieri, M. Babatunde Olatunji and Tito Puente.

The Corporation for National and Community Service named Alma College to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll With Distinction for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth. The Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement.

The business administration major from Monroe has seen first hand the economic effects on southeast Michigan of low-cost imports and Chinese monetary policies.
