Athletics Director Appointed

Ellen Bradbury Curtis

Ellen Curtis has assumed the duties of Athletic Director at Alma College effective July 1.

Curtis, a 1999 graduate of Alma and an All-American basketball player has been the assistant women's basketball coach and the senior women's athletic administrator and athletic coordinator for the Admissions Office.

As a student at Alma, Curtis was actively involved in volleyball and basketball, receiving first team All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association recognition and ultimately becoming league MVP and All-American.

Curtis said being an alumna is not necessary for the position, but has proven to be beneficial. "I understand what the Alma experience is all about and more importantly, what kind of experience we are trying to give our students," she said.

She is in the process of prioritizing the department's goals. "While many of the goals deal with internal processes and policies, some of the more visible goals focus on strengthening the connection of athletics with the campus community," she said. "My hope is to increase the positive view of athletics and to help facilitate the use of athletics as a shared experience for the entire campus." Future plans to be implemented by Curtis include enhancing the visibility and involvement of the Athletic Advisory Committee along with reinstating the Alma College Athletic Hall of Fame.

According to President Saundra Tracy, Curtis brings an energy and sense of direction to the program that will benefit athletics and the college, building on the strong reputation of the athletics program. "I look forward to working with her in this new role," Tracy said.

Head football coach and former co-athletic director, Jim Cole, said Curtis has done a lot with her time at the college. "She was a two-sport athlete during her time as a student at Alma and played at a high level. She is going to be a fine administrator; she shows a real love for the college and the conference," Cole said.

Curtis will also continue her position as assistant coach for women's basketball. She received her bachelor's degree in business administration and communication at Alma in 1999.

Bob Devaney, a 1939 graduate of Alma College, went on to become known as one of the greatest coaches in collegiate football history. In his 11 years as head coach at Nebraska, Devaney produced 11 winning seasons with two national championships. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1981. At Alma he played end and was the Scots’ Most Valuable Player in 1938.
