Alternative Break trips offer students the opportunity to spend a week in generous service to others. The work may include building homes for those in need, working in a food bank or providing child care in a homeless shelter. Through service to others, issues education, group fellowship and recreation, students reflect on what is important to them in their lives.
In February 2003, one group of 19 students worked on a Habitat for
Humanity home in Boca Raton, Florida. In February of 2004, three
alternative break trips, with a total of 37 students, traveled to
serve. One group traveled to Charleston, South Carolina to take part in
the Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challenge. This year, seven groups
of students, faculty and administrators are serving in the
hurricane-ravaged Gulf area, building affordable housing in New Mexico,
addressing urban poverty in North Carolina, helping developmentally
disabled citizens in Tennessee, helping in urban elementary classrooms
in Philadelphia and constructing trails in a Smoky Mountains wildlife
management area.
The multiple alternative break trips engage students in their choices of generous service February 24 - March 4, 2007. With significant subsidy from the Discovering Vocation project, these trips are available to students for as little as $100.
