Affordable Housing: Laredo, TX

Tuesday, March 1, 2005

Habitat For Humanity of Webb County wins. Alma College students win. The Laredo Bucks win.

Another productive day for the Laredo Alternative Break crew has put the four-house construction project two days ahead of schedule. The students' piece of house number 9 under construction for Lourdes "Lou Lou" Uvalle is as complete as possible and the crew starts on number 8 Wednesday.

"Do you all feel like you've done something?" asks Carol Sherwood, the head of the local Habitat chapter. "You are helping fulfill a dream. (Uvalle) never thought with her income that she could afford a home, but you are helping her do that."

Student debate on the way to Rio Bravo every morning centers on the choice of music or la musica, but privately their conversations reveal a hint of their pride in providing decent affordable housing. Their upbeat attitudes on the work site are infectuous and the respect they have for the hard-working home owners is genuine.

Tuesday evening, they dined on Chinese buffet with most of the Habitat crew and attended the Laredo Bucks hockey game against the Lubbock Cotton Kings. The pride of the Laredo community shut out the visitors with Alma leading the cheers.

The Jumbotron announced the Alma College presence before the game and showed Naomi Vance and Emily Shier dancing in the stands during the game. Bucks' T-shirts and decals from the concession stand were a big hit with Alma people.  Chelsey Foster and Dan Weidman caught free Tees thrown into the crowd.

No activities are scheduled for Wednesday night and the hard work has some of the crew talking about chillin' out. But rumors of free Salsa dance lessons are starting to surface and showers at the state park always refresh. The crew is looking forward to Thursday night when the Habitat and Alma crews get together for a cookout at the state park.
