HIV/AIDS: New York, NY

Monday, Feb. 28

The alarms went off early this morning in our group’s hostel Jazz on the Park. After a quick breakfast in our bohemian style lobby and a quick walk and ride through the subway our group arrived above ground at God’s Love We Deliver.

Our assignment today was to deliver meals by foot to clients in the Greenwich and Uptown districts of New York. Ready hot meals were handed to clients of the agency. These people, suffering from serious illnesses, need additional nutrition.

The agency got started up in 1985 and has delivered 7 ½ million meals since. The agency boasts 1400 volunteers and 70 employees, and a 2000 sq. ft. kitchen to work its magic in.

Pictured here are Erin, Rebecca, Haley, Heather, Eli and Sallie Schiede packing food at an assigned drop off point.

Alma's "green" residence hall, Wright Hall, was completed in January 2005. The modern, 60-bed apartment-style hall features a number of environmentally friendly features, including geothermal heating and cooling, recycled-content ceiling tiles and carpeting, energy-efficient windows, rooftop solar heating panels, energy-efficient showers and washing machines, and a computerized energy monitoring system.

Spring Term courses offer students opportunities to break out of the “Alma Bubble.” Off-campus study, especially in a foreign country, shows you how you relate to the rest of the world and how the rest of the world views American people, politics and policies. You can then integrate your real world experiences into your academic programs and your future career.
