Day 2: Sunday, February 27

Boston!

Today we woke to another cold, but very sunny day. Still a little unsure of whom each other was, we boarded a bus to Cambridge to explore the campus of Harvard and the surrounding town. We all agreed that Harvard is definitely prettier than Alma—and the fact that their dining hall is nothing like SAGA, but it’s more Harry Potter style! After Cambridge and Harvard, we tested out Boston’s T. After purchasing tokens we were well on our way to boarding the green line downtown to visit the aquarium and some historical sites located nearby. We spent the rest of the day looking at Fanueil Hall, and the North, South and Quincy Markets.

After our second long and cold day during this trip we departed for the Overlook Farm, in Rutland, Massachusetts. The 270 acre Overlook Farm is located approximately 60 miles west of Boston and on the top of a hill. We arrived around 9:30pm and settled into our bunks and got prepared for our first full day of work on the farm. Not quite sure what to expect, we went to sleep excited and a little unsure about the next week.

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. "It's a huge honor," says faculty director Dave Zerbe. "You can't apply to perform there; they seek you out."

Spring Term courses offer students opportunities to break out of the “Alma Bubble.” Off-campus study, especially in a foreign country, shows you how you relate to the rest of the world and how the rest of the world views American people, politics and policies. You can then integrate your real world experiences into your academic programs and your future career.
