In a blog post, religious studies faculty member Kate Blanchard writes, “Alan Miller defends the value of religious belief against the New Atheists, but seems to disapprove of all religious people who don’t therefore embrace his particular alternative. … Miller invites us to join in vigorous discussion, debate and even battle. To this invitation I reply: The Spiritual But Not Religious are here to stay. Get used to it.”

The student organization Active Minds sponsors campus events to educate people about mental health issues and break down the taboos surrounding them. “When people hear words like bipolar, suicide, depression, they are scared away. But suicides have increased in the local community in recent years. People think that if you talk about it, it’s going to give people suicidal ideations, but that’s not true. Suicide is real. It’s now. We cannot ignore it,” said Jennifer Showers, licensed counselor at the Counseling and Wellness Center.

Tara Riedel
Graduation: 2013
Major: Theatre

When Tara Riedel came to Alma College, she knew she would meet plenty of new people. But through her involvement in theatre, she has gotten to know someone she didn’t necessarily expect to: herself.

“I’ve learned so much about myself as a person in the last three years,” she says. “The Meisner technique has us focus on our acting partner instead of ourselves. As backward as it seems, I’ve learned that when you stop focusing on yourself, you really learn about yourself.”
